    Why would you use "an" in, let's say, "He earned an M.S. in physics" intsead of "he earned a M.S. in physics"?

    The grammar rule for indefinite articles a/an is a sound rule and not a spelling rule.
    a - for consonant sounds.
    an - for vowel sounds.

    an MS - an (em*es)
