According to the 1997 Guinness Book of World Records (the only edition I have in my home library), the largest house in the world is the 250-room, 175,000-square-foot Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. Wikipedia article on Biltmore House: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biltmore_Estate Guinness also gives St. Emmeram Castle in Germany as the "largest nonpalatial residence." It has 517 rooms and a floor space of 231,000 square feet. Of course, this information is 10 years old, and it's possible that these records have been surpassed. According to the Wikipedia article cited, Istana Nurul Iman is the largest occupied residence. A number of articles cite the palace's area as 200,000 square meters. http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/20090119/worlds-largest-hounse-sultan-brunei.htm Interestingly, the text in the Wikipedia article lists Windsor Castle as the world's largest inhabited castle.
