Great Britain has M roads (motorways), A roads and B roads which are marked as such on maps and signs. There are also C roads, which aren't. But where will you find the D road - and why is it D?

The D road is the dual carriageway which runs from Nantwich in Cheshire to Stoke in Staffs, so called because of its shape (a capital D) and also because its official name is the A500 , D being the roman numeral for 500, I grew up in Nantwich and travelled this road many times.

Nice work there. I had wondered if the number and the D were connected, but it doesn't look like it after all from the time over which it was built.
