    What is the origin of the term 'squatter' as in those who move into a residence and stay without paying rent?

    		The term squatter was first used in the US in about 1798 as a settler having no normal or legal title to the land occupied by him, especially one thus occupying land in a district not yet surveyed or apportioned by the government. It comes from the term to squat as in to sit on one's haunches.
