To cause (one's voice) to seem to come from a source other than oneself.

"To throw" one's voice is a standard term in ventriloquism but not in opera, other forms of vocal musical performance, or in the theater, in which "projecting" one's voice is the desired skill. If "to throw" has any special meaning in instrumental music, I am not aware of it.

    Perhaps Arpeggionist can help.

That having been said...a ventriloquist throws his/her voice even when the dummy sings.

...and THAT is as close as I can come...Throw is not a musical term that I'm familiar with either.

I'm not familiar with it either. Not in my classical times as a member of the RLPS and the Dvorak Society, nor in my current position as folk musician, and as print originator (text layout and music setting) for Without the C**p Books. I would take it to refer to the distance capability of a vocalist. The late Luciano Pavarotti would have had a good 'throw' without amplification, while many pop singers depend on large loudspeakers. Just my interpretation of the term.
