This glamorous couple contributed much to the myth of American expatriates in Europe and are said to have inspired works by two very famous writers. What isn't well known -- in part because few of his works survive -- is that the male half of the duo was quite a talented artist. Who were this husband and wife, and can you offer an illustration of one of the gentleman's fine paintings?

Question #85414. Asked by lanfranco. (Sep 05 07 4:34 PM)

I have it in a trice if you meant "female half,".....but I doubt you did.

    OK, no mistake of course....

The Fitzgerald's weren't the couple, but Scott was one of the famous authors who wrote about them, as did Hemingway, in "Tender is the Night" and "Garden of Eden."

Here is "Watch," an intriguing painting by Gerald Murphy, husband of Sara:

    I didn't.

Let's see: you might think about a comment you made on a very recent question.

Yes, I did think about him, and meant to add "respectively" after the "...Eden,"

O.K. crossing posts. Happens all the time.

Now, things seem to be a bit garbled here. "Gerald and Sara Murphy" are the couple, not Scott and Zelda. Scott wrote "Tender is the Night," and Hemingway wrote "Garden of Eden."

"Watch" is a fine painting by Gerald Murphy. I also like this one, "Wasp and Pear," in the Museum of Modern Art in New York:

I was just being terse. Or attempting to be so. The antecedent of "them" is "the couple."

I'd first thought the couple was Scott and Zelda. Zelda painted. Then I realized Scott, as well as Ernest, had written about the couple you had in mind, Gerald and Sara.

If you would like it yet more garbled, just say the word.

An iconic image associated with the World War II homefront, this figure was depicted in more than one version. One of the most famous -- sold about 5 years ago for nearly 5 million dollars -- was clearly inspired by a much earlier painting by one of history's great artists. What are these two works, and can you offer a couple of comparative sites?

According to some writers, this unfortunate man, along with his male descendants, was the subject of some of the greatest lines of verse ever penned by one of history's greatest poets - though these are historically controversial and, depending on the interpetation, quite gruesome. Centuries after his death, he also became the subject of a couple of great works of art. Who was he, in what work of literature does he appear, and can you provide - depending on your tastes - an illustration of one of the artworks?

The unusual name of this place is a contraction of a genitive form in the local language. As rare as that may be, the locale in question is well known as the hometown of a visionary artist, whose works have inspired modern artists and writers and even rock groups. Who is the artist, what is the city, and what ironic and tragic coincidence occurred there during World War II?
