Five weeks after the launch of the U.S. satellite Telstar, the U.K. group The Tornados and composer Joe Meek came out with an instumental piece named Telstar which reached #1 in the U.K. and the U.S. No British composition had ever done the latter before Telstar did in 1962. The unique "Space Age" sounds were not the result of recording the otherworldly sounds of the satellite, as some rumors claimed, of course, but a combination of the unusual sound of an instrument called the clavioline and special effects, including a flushing toilet bowel to simulate a rocket firing. Sadly Joe Meek never received a penny in royalties due to a lawsuit filed by a composer for the French film Austerlitz. The lawsuit was decided in favour of the British composer one year after his 1967 passing. The wikipedia article includes the music.
But now I see that the answer is already here, even though I had been told there was no reply. Argh!
