Think I'd disagree - what about Queen Victoria - longest reign, Empress of India, founder of the Victoria Cross, the Victoria and Albert museum, even the 'Queen Vic' in Eastenders ;-) Though, granted, she didn't get an American state named after her!

Strictly, Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland not of England and Ireland as was Elizabeth I. It was Elizabeth's father Henry VIII that got the Irish Parliament to make him King, and this was a title used by the English and later British monarchs until the Act of Union in 1801 combined the two titles.

What does most famous even mean? If fame is to mean the amount of people that can recognise your name or image, then you'd have a fair way to go to beat the current Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Let's not forget she's Britain's first Queen in the age of mass media. Beamed via television, internet, radio, mass international newspapers, magazines, even a movie, worldwide. And in a world of six billion people, MUCH more than in 1901, the last year Victoria saw come in. According to the Guiness Book of Records, QE2's the most famous person in the world. Presidents and Prime Ministers come and go. Pop starts and film stars are only known in countries with cinemas and home sound systems. Look at the lack of recognition those in Africa had on their faces when Madonna turned up wanting a baby. Tricky, but when it comes to fame, I think you'd have to resort to Jesus to better her. Even Andy Warhol said, 'When I grow up, I want to be as famous as the Queen of England'.

Elizabeth II isn't the Queen of Ireland though.

She is the Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Ok, billythebrit, you've convinced me! :-) mick_is_god, why would Elizabeth II be Queen of Ireland? It's an independent country (even if North and South do combine to play Rugby!)

She isn't the Queen of Southern Ireland, which is the Republic of Ireland. She is the Queen of Northern Ireland, which puts her outside the scope of the question. The only Queens regnant of England and Ireland were Elizabeth I, Mary I, Jane, and Mary II, with Anne up to the Act of Union after which she was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland.
