    One of the romantic legends of Art History concerns a woman who is thought to have been the model for several paintings -- including one of his most famous -- by a love-struck artist whose name can be translated as small versions of a certain type of container. It is said by some that this woman was also the mistress of a doomed member of a famous family and that he once participated in a contest in her name, carrying a banner painted by the artist. Who was she, who was the artist, and can you find me one or two of the putative portraits?

    This is an entirely unconfirmed legend -- insofar as both Botticelli and Giuliano de' Medici are concerned -- but one beloved in the world of "art appreciation." My favorite supposed portrait of Simonetta is actually this one:
