Given that most monarchs in history have died in the battlefield, or been executed somehow, or simply died in bed, the one I'm looking for may well be unique. He died in an accident rock-climbing at an age when many have given that sort of thing up. Who was he?

You must be talking about Albert I of Belgium who died in a rock climbing accident on February 17, 1934 at the age of 58.
From Wikipedia: "King Albert I died in a climbing accident at Marche-les-Dames, in the Ardennes region of Belgium near Namur. He is interred in the Royal vault at the Church of Our Lady, Laeken Cemetery, Brussels, Belgium. His death has been a great deal of discussion. Rumours of murder were disputed."
