Could you give me a few examples of places in the UK that are on either side of two bordering counties so as to be classified by some people to be in one county while others say its in the opposite county?

This speaks of two Lapland towns of Tornio and Haparanda.

I don't know if this is what you are looking for or not.

There aren't any that I can think of. Apart from places like Southport, which is nowadays in Merseyside officially, but still Lancashire to a part of the population. It's always actually been in either one or the other. Some place names that are not administrative units may straddle boundaries. Aintree is in both Sefton and Liverpool, but that's not counties. Boundary lines in the UK are pretty acurately defined. It's only when transfers between counties take place that people start to use 'wrong' addresses. Some people in Todmorden prefer to be Yorkshire rather than Lancashire. and vice versa.

The town of Emsworth is mostly in Hampshire, but part of it is across the river Ems in West Sussex.
