Originally it was written to be sung a cappella in a church in the Austrian Alps. The organ had failed and the only way to replace it was to bring another one up the mountain. There was too much snow for such an endeavor so "Silent Night" was written for the choir.

If you listen to the rhythm of "Silent Night", you can actually hear the influence of Austrian yodelling.
Just try "yodelay-hoo, yodelay-hee, yody-hoo, yody-hee" to the tune of "Silent Night".
The church near Salzberg where Silent Night was first performed is now an Austrian tourist attraction.
