    What is Columbia in the United States, as in Washington, District of Columbia, Columbia University, etc., when I thought it was a country in South America?

    "Columbia" is a poetic name for the United States, based on the surname of Christopher Columbus.

    "Colombia" is a South American republic, also named for Christopher Columbus, known there as Cristobal Colon.
