According to what I understand, you may copy CD tracks from a CD you have purchased or otherwise acquired legally onto an MP3 player or iPod FOR YOUR OWN USE. It is not legal to copy someone else's CD onto your device. This is equivalent to copying the CD onto a blank for your use, thus depriving the copyright holder of their revenue. It is legal to borrow a CD and listen to it, and to let someone listen to your MP3 player or iPod. However, if you copy tracks onto these devices and then give the CD away, you are supposed to wipe the tracks off the devices as you are no longer in possession of an original copy. This applies just the same to tracks legally downloaded from a website for payment. You pay to use them yourself. The other thing forbidden is public performance. This doesn't mean you can't play CDs at a party. It means broadcasting them, playing them at a place where people pay to enter (disco), or in a place of business - shop, etc - where the public have access. Here you need the appropriate licence from the copyright agencies, or written permission from the copyright holder (and don't bother writing to Madonna or Eminem or so on - you won't get it),
