    Why do American football players wear knickers?

    		I think the question is "Why do they not wear long pants and only knickers?"

    The answer is: due to the bending of the knee, the gap of loose pant material at the back of the knee would become a grabbing point and a overall nuisance in such a physical sport.

    This is why the pants are cinched just below the knee joint.
