What do salmon do in the Fall and Winter?

Question #87743. Asked by WarmWestWind. (Oct 25 07 10:21 AM)

Pretty wide open question -- They swim, grow and do the "salmon run" thing as well as other "fishy" stuff.

I was hoping someone could tell me if they all do the salmon run in the fall and then die off or if they only spawn after a certain age. If they do live for a few years do they just stay where they are for the winter or do they swim to warmer waters? I know it is a silly question, but I have wondered since I saw a salmon run. It was a totally amazing thing to watch.

They only come up river to spawn. And in some varieties, they go back down again afterwards. Well, a few of them do. Some salmon don't migrate - they're stuck in lakes without suitable access to the sea. Presumably these lakes once did have a deep enough - or level enough - path through. These salmon have now evolved into new species that probably would throw their fins up in horror at the idea of going to sea. http://www.atlanticsalmontrust.org/

I refer to the Pacific salmon, specifically Copper River reds, with which I have experience observing, harvesting, and of course, eating.

The salmon that still haven't returned to their spawning grounds keep feeding and growing in the ocean. They run in the summer, May-June.
