I was hoping someone could tell me if they all do the salmon run in the fall and then die off or if they only spawn after a certain age. If they do live for a few years do they just stay where they are for the winter or do they swim to warmer waters? I know it is a silly question, but I have wondered since I saw a salmon run. It was a totally amazing thing to watch.

They only come up river to spawn. And in some varieties, they go back down again afterwards. Well, a few of them do. Some salmon don't migrate - they're stuck in lakes without suitable access to the sea. Presumably these lakes once did have a deep enough - or level enough - path through. These salmon have now evolved into new species that probably would throw their fins up in horror at the idea of going to sea. http://www.atlanticsalmontrust.org/
