mainly white with no brown plumage, head feathers vary seasonally from dirty white/brown to pure white/black, and tail whitish with no dark bars.

White underneath, grey on top of wings often with black markings. Head may have black or brown mask in spring/summer breeding plumage; this may disappear totally or reduce to a blob. Where this is a characteristic of the species, it only applies to birds ready to breed. Non-breeding birds stay in winter plumageJuvenile gulls are brown, usually mottled, and rather resemble skuas to an extent. They may keep this colour for more than one year, or may gradually increase the amount of white (and usually look very scruffy too).
