I'll point out that RoadWarrior2Go is talking about the single, which peaked at #58 in 1977, and rightiam is referring to the album, which peaked at #5. The question does not indicate which it is asking for, unless you want to get pedantic about the meaning of "from 1976." The album was released on November 10, 1976, and the individual track 'The Pretender' was the second single from that collection.

"The album's release in November 1976 gave Jackson Browne his first top ten album. It reached #5 on the Top Pop Album charts and stayed on the charts for 35 weeks. The first single, "Here Comes Those Tears Again" peaked at #23 while the follow-up single, "The Pretender," reached #58 in the spring of 1977. (The album was also released in a limited edition audiophile version by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs.)"
