    The Greeks took the idea of the flame from their gods. Supposedly at the altar of some of the gods (Hera, Zeus, and Hestia) there was a eternal flame burning on the altar. The idea of using the flame from the gods was symbolic.

    Am I right in thinking that it's the torch relay that your question is in regards to (since you say "before" the games)? If that's the case, then that was in 1936 before the Berlin Games. 1928 would be when the flame was once again made part of the Olympic games, by having it lit during the event.
