On a map of world, the east coast of South America and the west coast of Africa look as though they would fit together like two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Why might this be so?

All the landmasses used to be one great landmass called Pangaea. Over time, due to plate tectonics, the moving of the fire in the mantle of the earth, the continents, have slowly, through millions of years, spread farther and farther apart. South America and Africa are not the only examples one can see of possible attachment.
