What extremely popular 19th century painting describing peasants at prayer in the fields was exhibited in America with the totally incorrect title 'Remembering Their Dead Child'?

    Question #88369. Asked by Flem-ish. (Nov 11 07 10:04 AM)

    queproblema

This must be Jean-Francois Millet's "The Angelus," also known as "Evening Prayer." Salvador Dali was convinced the couple was praying over their dead child, but I'm not aware it was ever exhibited under that title.

Either the Wiki article is mistaken on one point, that the couple was prayng "to the Angelus," or I am. I understand the "Angelus" to be a thrice-daily prayer said by devout Catholics upon hearing the church bells rung. It is a moment to pause and turn to God.

    Sure Millet, not Millais.

Angelus I guess the painter makes it clear it is getting dark.

Painted nearly 450 years ago by an artist who founded a professional dynasty, this work inspired poems by two 20th-century authors, one American and one British. The first poem takes its title from the title of the painting; the title of the second refers to the institution where the work of art now resides. What is the painting, and to which poems am I referring?

Though it is now one of the most frequently-heard songs in the U.S., it was written almost 100 years ago by two people who were ignorant of the American institution it celebrates. Famously inserted into an otherwise classical musical interlude in an extremely funny film of the 1930's, it is closely associated with a well-known Chicago broadcaster and his attempts to liven up a traditional "break" in certain proceedings. It also mentions a popular snack invented in the 19th century. What is it, and what was that film?

Which French 19th century painter caused a scandal for a nude painting of a woman with an orchid in her hair and a slipper dangling from her right foot, though the nudity in the painting was actually no "worse" than that of Titian's "Venus of Urbino"?
