In simpler terms it is when the blood clot is lost too soon after an extraction. The area dries out and becomes inflamed and painful. I had one after one of my wisdom teeth that was fused with my jawbone grew in sideways. They had to chisel it out. When dry socket developed a few days later the dentist filled it with a paste made from cloves. It numbed it right up.
