Why do mongoose and snakes have the tendency to fight with each other?

They don't. Mongooses eat snakes, amongst other things, and snakes have an instinct to avoid being eaten. A mongoose won't fight a cobra, for example, in the wild as it won't eat cobra. In captivity, it may have no option other than to fight if put in a ring with a cobra. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongoose
