Did "Karolus Magnus" (Charlemagne) ever cross the Alps on horseback as the painter Louis David seems to suggest in his famous painting of Napoleon doing so?

    Question #88760. Asked by Flem-ish. (Nov 20 07 2:52 AM)

According to H E Marshall's "The Story of Europe" -
"So across the Alps Charlemagne passed with a mighty army." (my edition is published by 'Yesterday's Classics' and the passage is on page 53)
This was in response to the Pope Adrian I asking for his help to subdue the Lombards.
As Charlemagne was the leader, and in his prime, it is likely that he had the finest horse money could buy, to ride as he led his troops to battle.

OK, thanks. That solves the problem.
This is a picture of the painting.

On what mount did Napoleon cross the Alps in 1800?

Captured artistically by a famous painter, this mayor (who changed his name to co-incide with a certain flower), eventually became a judicial officer. Although his commencement point of the 'procedure' in the painting seems unorthodox, he continued with fame and success and today a body part is named for him. Who is it, who was the painter and the painting, and what is the body part?

Who was the subject of a painting by a French Neoclassical painter who is now perhaps less famous than the backless couch on which she posed?
