    To give a bit more than his name, this man was a colorful and influential senator before becoming vice president; he'd been aiming for the presidency.

    One eighth Kaw (Kansa) Indian, he's the only person of Native American ancestry to attain such a high office in the US. He spent part of his unpromising boyhood on a reservation, actually shot bows and arrows and feared Cheyenne raids, becoming an expert horseman and working for a time as a jockey.

    He was a consummate politician who unfortunately favored the Curtis family above the Kaw tribe when it came to land allocations.
