It was concocted by Marius Casadesus in the late 1920's or very early 1930's and while achieving some success in convincing "experts" as to its authenticity, it was debunked fairly clearly by 1956. At the absolute best, it MAY have been a fabrication based on fragments that Mozart left for some other project, but this theory is nearly always rejected as well. A recording on CD is available.

The main perpetuator of the myth was the violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who knew full well that Mozart was not the composer but played the concerto anyway in its best known recordings. I've heard the concerto and could immediately tell that it could not have been written before 1850 - by which time the composer it was attributed to was long dead. I'd always thought Menuhin or Kreisler actualy composed it.

Yes sir!, Marius, an uncle of Robert (all from
a very musical and talented family),was a
"practical joker", Kreisler's style, and he
was also the perpetrator of a "Haendel" viola
concerto. First recording by Menuhin in 1934
with Monteux.
