Many coats have an elastic cord with an aglet attached hanging from their hems. Maybe I'm being dumb here, but is there a name for those dangly coat things and what are they for?

Question #89030. Asked by gmackematix. (Nov 25 07 6:56 PM)

    They're drawstrings:

I'm kind of surprised they don't have a fancier name.

Thanks. I suppose I should have made the link with drawstring bags and worked that out for myself but didn't.
I have also heard of the muscles that enable a hedgehog to form a ball being called drawstring muscles.
My coat strings never actually have the aglet attached as they always snag on something and break off.

If you mean the little plastic or wooden bauble that keeps the drawstring or cord from getting lost in the hem, I believe they are called retainers, but I'm not having a lot of luck finding an example online.
