Bertha Pobrutzky was no student of Brahms', she did however sing in his women's choir in Hamburg. He renewed his acquaintence with her when he moved to Vienna, by which time she had married one Artur Faber. The "Wiegenlied" (Cradle Song, lullaby) was written for her to sing to her first child, named Johannes.
Brahms wrote another lullaby for an ex-student from Hanover, his good friend the violinist Joseph Joachim. It is published as the second of the two songs for alto, viola and piano Op. 91. Brahms made use of an old folk melody for that song as well, "Joseph, Lieber Joseph Mein". The song is known by the title "Geistliches Wiegenlied" ("Spiritual Cradle Song").
