St Andrews Links is the Home of Golf, where the game evolved and where the spirit and traditions of golf have been safeguarded for over six centuries.

This is disputed by the Netherlands (or some of the inhabitants thereof anyway) who claim the game originated there. http://www.golf-information.info/chole-mail-kolven.html
In fact, the game's earliest beginning would have been when some caveman hit a stone with a stick and thought there was a potential as a long distance weapon. Some golfers are still trying to develop this side of the game. (It has not proved a good way to deliver grenades...)
