    This is disputed by the Netherlands (or some of the inhabitants thereof anyway) who claim the game originated there. http://www.golf-information.info/chole-mail-kolven.html
    In fact, the game's earliest beginning would have been when some caveman hit a stone with a stick and thought there was a potential as a long distance weapon. Some golfers are still trying to develop this side of the game. (It has not proved a good way to deliver grenades...)
