German romantic pianist and composer (1815-1883), friend of Brahms and Schumann. He left some very fine works on symphonic, piano and in particular chamber pieces. His string quartets and his piano trios are some of the best of his time. Who was he?

German composer, musical director and teacher (1865-1920), from a Scottish family, Brahms' direct pupil, who left several chamber works rather conservative but very well written. Almost forgotten now. Brahms protected and helped him, but was a ferocious critic of his works. Who was he?

An unjustly neglected German composer, pianist and teacher (1817-1993), Mendelssohn's pupil, friend of Schumann, who praised his works. He wrote two symphonies, two violin concertos and many very fine chamber instrumental works, in the best tradition of 19th century and IMO is as good as any. In particular, his string quartets, quintets and sextets are some of the best romantic chamber. Do you know him?
