Curiously to the English ear, pronounced "primmer" in the USA.

I'm American and I've only ever heard it pronounced with a long I.

I have never heard anyone say "primmer" either.

However, this site includes it as a commonly mispronounced word.

    primer: (schoolbook) prim-mer, not pry-mer

I always assumed since it is a primary schoolbook, it was shortened to 'pry-mer' but apparently that's not correct.

You've never heard me or my mother, both Americans; we always say "primmer" for a child's reader or for a page of sewing directions. "Pry-mer" is the base coat that prepares a surface for a finish coat of paint. Or it's part of a blasting cap or cartridge.

Both Merriam-Webster (See above.) and American Heritage Dictionaries show the short "i" sound.

We needn't get as upset about it as the people on this blog, though:

"Garden and Hearth," an American online magazine, seems oblivious to the controversy, titling an article "A Primer on Primer."

    Don't you love English?
