Playing Scrabble today, my sister wanted to use the word "xerox" but I disallowed it as it's a product and not a word. I'm sure there is a term for words like this that have become everyday use to describe its use. Rollerblade and Kleenex are probably some other examples. Please help me out.

    'Generic trademarks'.

For what it's worth 'xerox' is an accepted word in the Sowpods dictionary used for Scrabble tournaments in the UK, Australia and elsewhere. I'm not sure if it's accepted in the US and Canada.
