What ports were promised to Armenia after World War I?

Question #89959. Asked by author. (Dec 17 07 12:05 AM)

    AyatollahK

Armenia was supposed to get a significant chunk of modern-day eastern Turkey as part of the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire, including the major port of Trebizond (now Trabzon).

However, the Turkish-Armenian War of 1920 put an end to Armenian expansion, resulting in the Treaty of Alexandropol,

Although this treaty was never finalized, as Russia then invaded and conquered Armenia, the redrawn border was subsequently confirmed by the Treaty of Kars.

    This is correct.

In addition to this Woodrow Wilson promised them Batum.
This is today's Batumi in Georgia. However, Turkey decided to cede this territory to the USSR in 1920. Because of the large muslim population in the area they did not want Batum to be governed by the Christian (and also hostile) Armenia.

    This might be added:

In 1878, Batumi was annexed by the Russian Empire in accordance with Treaty of San Stefano between Russia and the Ottoman Empire.

During 1901, 16 years prior to the Russian Revolution, Joseph Stalin the future leader of the Soviet Union, lived in the city organizing strikes. Unrest during World War I led to Turkey re-entering in April 1918, followed by the British in December, who stayed until July 1920. Kemal Atatürk then ceded it to the Bolsheviks, on the condition that it be granted autonomy, for the sake of the Muslims among Batumi's mixed population.
