I have just taken a quiz which states that purple and yellow make brown. Is this correct? Surely the yellow would lighten the purple, making it a mauvey colour.

You can see it here, in almost living color. This link shows blending of colors opposite each other on the color wheel to make browns and grays. Be sure to scroll all the way down. http://realcolorwheel.com/complementsneutral.htm
This is more serious, specially if you click on the Munsell color system. Note that mixing light is very different from mixing pigments. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_theory
