I'm not sure these were all number one hits, but you may be looking for Tony Burrows.

The king of British one-hit wonders, bubblegum division, has to be Tony Burrows, a veteran of such near-miss '60s bands as the Flowerpot Men and the Ivy League. The singer came out of retirement to front Edison Lighthouse, a studio group concocted by writer-producer Tony Macaulay to cut the bubbly 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)'. The single's success essentially won Burrows a solo contract, but when he flopped at that he returned to sessions; that's him singing lead on 'Beach Baby', First Class's cloning of the Beach Boys. Burrows also sang lead on one-shots by the Brotherhood of Man, the Pipkins and White Plains; in fact, he once appeared on a U.K. television show three times in one night, singing three different hits by three different groups.

On a February 1970 edition of BBC's 'Top of the Pops' Burrows performed with three different groups; Brotherhood of Man ('United We Stand'), White Plains ('My Baby Loves Loving') and Edison Lighthouse ('Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes').
Burrows returned to the show a couple of weeks later as lead singer of the Pipkins' novelty hit 'Gimme Dat Ding.'

"All four songs by all four ersatz groups also reached the U.S. top 20 that same year, as did Burrows once more in 1974, as the singer for studio combo First Class' No. 4 hit, the Beach Boys homage 'Beach Baby.' And so concludes the Twisted Tale of Tony Burrows, the only person to hold the rare and paradoxical distinction of being a one-hit wonder five times."

I haven't yet verified which of these songs were UK number 1s, but I think Eric Clapton has a good chance at being a right answer too.

    "For Your Love" - Yardbirds
"Sunshine of Your Love" - Cream
"While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - Beatles
"Layla" - Derek & the Dominoes
