Officially, the Republic of China (ROC) maintains its claim to be the legitimate government of the Chinese mainland, with a capital at Nanjing.

Thus, formally, Taipei is only the capital of Taiwan province of the ROC, and administered as a separate municipality. De facto, Taipei functions as the capital of the ROC on Taiwan.
