I have to agree with deputygary, I think you must mean WWII. I found two different Clifton James' who both served in WWII.

This one, M.E. Clifton James, was in the First World War, but his 'unusual role' was during his time in the Second World War, because he looked strikingly like Field Marshall Montgomery. He was used to impersonate Montgomery to confuse the German intelligence.
