    Holly, I think you are thinking of 'The Grapes Of Wrath' but they were a family from Oklahoma, so we may be thinking of differnt movies

    This may be Spencer's Mountain from 1963, starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. This is the story 'The Waltons' was based on.

    I hate to disagree McGruff, but even though 'Spencer's Mountain' the movie was
    based on a novel by Earl Hammer, The Waltons was based on Earl Hamner's made
    for TV movie 'The Homecoming.' See:
