A total of 16 10-win teams have missed the playoffs since the beginning of the 16 game schedule. Denver, in 1985 became the only 11-win team to miss out on the playoffs.
Ten win teams missing the playoffs used to be frequent. Until 1990, only five teams per conference made it to the playoffs. In 1990, it was changed to six teams per conference.
From 1979 to 1990, 11 teams had 10+ wins and missed the playoffs.
Washington was 10-6 in 1979.
New England was 10-6 in 1980.
Denver was 10-6 in 1981.
Denver was 11-5 in 1985.
Washington was 10-6 in 1985.
Seattle and Cincinnati tied for 6th in the AFC in 1986, each at 10-6.
The New York Giants and New Orleans tied for 6th in the NFC in 1988, each going 10-6.
Washington and Green Bay tied for 6th in the NFC in 1989, each at 10-6.
From 1990 to the present, only five teams have missed the playoffs with 10 wins.
San Francisco and Philadelphia missed out for the NFC in 1991, each at 10-6.
Miami was 10-6 in 2003.
Kansas City was 10-6 in 2005.
Finally, Cleveland went 10-6 this year and missed the playoffs.
