    What is the difference in meaning between the words "continually" and "continuously"?

    Continually- Recurring regularly or frequently: the continual need to pay the mortgage.

    Yet the second definition in this dictionary link seems to imply they mean the same http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/continually

    Continually- Is recurring regularly (not uninterupted)

    continuously- Is Uninterrupted in time

    Yes, that was what I'd always thought. It was the definition I'd found that confused me.

    Continually does it repeatedly, but continuously does it without stopping. "He's continually knocking on my door" means he's there very often but does take breaks (may need a restraining order or injunction to stop him); "He's continuously knocking on my door" means the so-and-so won't go away at all and will probably need to be removed by the police.
