A very prolific German composer from the 19th-20th centuries; he wrote hundreds of works in the tradition of the barroque and classical periods, including many variations, fugues, even a chaconne, for almost every instrumental combinations, works for organ, solo piano, solo violin, viola and cello, sonatas, etc. Today he is almost ignored by the players although there are many recordings of his major works. He was a most excelent harmonizer and contrapuntist. Do you know who he is?

You might be asking about Franz Schmidt, though I'm sure other names qualify.

As Schmidt was Austrian, perhaps you are looking for Sigfrid Karg-Elert.

Who was the 19th-20th century German composer who is remembered and famous mostly for his huge symphonic pieces, who in his youth wrote many chamber pieces including a string quartet, works for piano trio, cello and violin with piano and a violin sonata, most of which have been forgotten?

An unjustly neglected German composer, pianist and teacher (1817-1993), Mendelssohn's pupil, friend of Schumann, who praised his works. He wrote two symphonies, two violin concertos and many very fine chamber instrumental works, in the best tradition of 19th century and IMO is as good as any. In particular, his string quartets, quintets and sextets are some of the best romantic chamber. Do you know him?

American pianist from Russian parents (1926-1969) who formed a famous trio with two other superb virtuosi, and left many wonderful recordings, including Brahms' works for solo piano which is still a classic. His version of Haendel Variations is considered one of the best available. Who was he?
