Who first called New Orleans "The Big Easy"?

    Question #91073. Asked by star_gazer. (Jan 13 08 12:07 AM)

The Big Easy was possibly a reference by musicians in the early 20th century to the relative ease of finding work there. It also may have originated in the Prohibition era when the city was considered one big speak-easy due to the inability of the federal government to control alcohol sales in open violation of the 18th Amendment. The term was used by local columnist Betty Gillaud in the 1970s to contrast life in the city to that of New York City.[71] The name also refers to New Orleans' status as a major city, and at one time "one of the cheapest places in America to live" and came into popular usage throughout the United States in the wake of the 1987 film The Big Easy, which was set in New Orleans.

Who named New Orleans 'The Big Easy'?

In the course of Baloo's peregrinations, he came across two pubs in a place called Glapwell. One was called 'The Plug and Feathers' and the other was called 'The Young Vanish'. The second is easy to explain (yes, it is...) but why the first?

Why are so many places in the US called 'New' such as New York, New England, New Hampshire, and New Orleans, instead of having original names?
