Which US state has had the most capitols in its history?

    Question #91132. Asked by star_gazer. (Jan 14 08 12:10 PM)

    BRY2K

My votes goes to the state of Texas.

Since 1721 when it was a Spanish colony I count 11 separate capitals including the current one - Austin.

    They are: Los Adaes (LA)
San Antonio de Béxar (now San Antonio) 1772
    Saltillo (COA)
    Monclova (COA) 1833
    Washington (now Washington-on-the-Brazos)
    Galveston 1836
    Harrisburg 1836
    Velasco 1836
    Columbia 1836
    Houston 1837
    Austin 1839

    Georgia - 12 including Atlanta.

Georgia had 11 previous capitals before Atlanta became the current capital in 1868.

Just a little nit-pick here - is star_gazer asking about capitAls or capitOls. Two different things which states of the USA have both of. They have capitals - chief administrative towns and capitols - the building in that town where the top layer of the administration is carried out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_state_capitols_in_the_United_States

    The nit-picker has a point.
If the question was: Which US state has the most capitols at the present time, I would ask Rhode Island.
There seem to be two legislative buildings there, the State House and the White Horse Tavern. Unless the latter is a joke.

Well the White Horse Tavern seems to have been used as an official building historically, but today it is obviously just a tavern.

I meant capitals, but due to the typo we'll accept capitols.
