Your source only lists US shows. How about worldwide? I'm still rooting for Coronation Street! Oh, and don't dismiss British TV so quickly. We did invent TV!

I'm going to offer up 60 Minutes, with (as of January 13, 2007) 830 episodes.

The granddaddy (and the Rolls-Royce) of newsmagazines, it set the standard for all that followed, and has kept on ticking on CBS since Sept. 24, 1968, with its familiar format of three stories (most of them hard news) and a commentary or two.

    Air Time:Sunday 7:00 on CBS
    Premiere Date: September 24, 1968
    Starring: Mike Wallace, Anderson Cooper...
Description: The oldest and most watched news magazine on television enters yet another season of getting the real story of America's most prevalent issues.
Show History: "60 Minutes" premiered on September 24, 1968 and has brought us respected news correspondents like Mike Wallace, Dan Rather, and Ed Bradley.

I'm fairly confident there should be some soaps that would make 830 episodes pale in comparison, as they normally have five episodes a week rather than one.
I think any answer to this question should include the number of episodes.

Now, seriously, I'm going for "As the World Turns" with 13,185 episodes as of January 17, 2007.

I believe it has been on longer than Coronation Street and it is the longest running soap in the US.

I'm finding episodes listed for Coronation Street that haven't even aired yet.

    6739. Friday 25th Jan 2008 (Episode 2)
First aired: 1/25/2008 Production Code: P694/6739

By that date, As the World Turns will be on episode 13,191.

"Guiding Light" has some support from the Guinness Book of Records as the longest running soap (I realise this is not the same thing as greatest number of episodes.)

    15,331 episodes (tv)
    17,890 including radio episodes

I bow to you. I should have known The Guiding Light was older. Now, I'm wondering what confounded site I found "longest running soap" for As the World Turns. Grrrr.

As the World Turns is the second longest-running American television soap opera (the first being Guiding Light), airing each weekday on CBS.

'Days of Our Lives' is probably third with 10,735 episodes as of January 8, 2008.
