Margaret Thatcher said in April 1983, "Some say Maggie may and others say Maggie may not," wishing to appear coy over the election date, but who was Maggie May?

Maggie May was a prostitute who liked the sailors. She takes a sailor to her room, gets him drunk and walks off with his money and clothes. Maggie is arrested and transported to Van Diemans Land Australia.

Incidentally, the tune of Maggie May is very similar to that of (Keep your feet still) Geordie Hinny, and I've known some interesting situations arise in sessions when someone attempts to change tune from one to the other.
And, in answer to the question, I was. Back in the unregulated days on AskFT several of us used more than one name. In addition to Baloo, I ran Puzzled Bear - a rather naive character - and maggy may. Maggy had less than perfect spelling and punctuation, but was very quick on the double entendre without being overtly vulgar. It was (mostly) in the mind of the reader. No-one sussed me out at the time, so I believe, and both Bear and Maggy were taken to be female. (Not intended in the case of Bear.) I sometimes wonder if any of Maggy has survived in the archives.
