A certain string quartet ensemble begun in the first years of the 20th century and stood active until the 60s. At first they were almost all Hungarians, but later all the members were Russians. Very famous as interpreters of classic and romantic composers. Composition changed several times. Players were also famous because they couldn't stand each other, and only joined to rehearse and play. In hotels they took separate
rooms and never ate together. Do you know the name of this famous string quartet?

It certainly sounds like the Budapest Quartet (1917-1967)
I could not find much about their relationships with one another. An article in Time magazine (December 20, 1943) said the Russians (as they had become by them) played bridge and poker while travelling together, but saw little of each other socially.

The original founder of the quartet has a great story to his name (the name escapes me). He wound up teaching at the Mannes College of Music in New York, which was my alma mater. It seems he was a soldier in WW1, and was shot in battle, declared dead by his doctors, and lived well into the 1980s to tell about it. It seems he was the person who lived longest after having been pronounced dead (he outlived the doctors by far).
