Why can you see through cold water, but not hot?

Picture this...I just boiled some water for tea...poured the HOT water into a clear cup...voila...I can see straight through it. Spooky, eh?

I'd be afraid to open my eyes in hot water.

There's no simple answer. Indeed, it's usually the other way around. Cold water can hold more dissolved gases and is usually cloudier straight out of the tap. That's why it is recommended that you make ice cubes out of hot water (to avoid bubbles). However, hot water is more likely to dissolve solids such as the lead, copper, or iron found in many pipes. So, depending on your pipes, you may actually have dissolved sediments in your hot water.
