What is the most dissonant interval in equally tempered diatonic scale?

    Question #91696. Asked by 3:2. (Jan 28 08 10:55 PM)

    Arpeggionist

According to the rules of counterpoint, the tritone. The ration of frequencies in a tritone is one to the square root of two, which is not a rational number (whereas all other intervals within the octave can be expressed in simple frequency relationships).

By the way, just a bit of nitpicking here, but there is no such thing as an "equally tempered diatonic" scale. A diatonic scale is one consisting of seven notes - a mode. The "equal temperament" division of the octave is a system of twelve notes to the octave, and is referred to as the "chromatic" scale.
