This 19-20th century composer, pedagogue, teacher, conductor and ethnologist, had left symphonic, opera and chamber works. Investigator on folk music, he wrote the greatest solo cello sonata since Bach's suites, only for really virtuoso cellists for the formidable technical demands. Who was he?

Sounds like Zoltán Kodály , although I don't know that he did much conducting.

Yes, Kodaly. And he did conducting for a while. His solo cello sonata is absolutely extraordinary. There's an old recording by Starker in the 50s. which is deffinitive (he made 2 more, but the first was the best).

It is even more exciting to watch a cellist playing the Kodaly sonata, as I have done several times in my short years. I never could bring myself to get a recording, as I fear it won't match my memory of the performance.
