Tarzan, Lord Greystoke has the surname Clayton - he was never christened with a first name, unless you count the name, Tarzan, given to him by an ape. ****** In 1888, the British Colonial Office posted John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, to West Africa. He is urged to leave his wife, Lady Alice, behind due to the danger of the assignment. Brave Lady Alice insists that she accompany her husband. Lord Greystoke is to investigate the illegal slave trade in the British Colonies! Off the coast of West Africa the crew mutinies, killing the ship's captain and officers. The Claytons are saved from death by a sailor named Binns whom they have befriended. Instead of instant death they are set ashore with some supplies to face the jungle alone! Lord Greystoke has built a cabin for himself and Lady Alice. Soon their son is born. Lady Alice dies within the year. As Clayton mourns, the cabin is attacked by a tribe of great apes under the leadership of Kerchak. Clayton is killed, but the young Lord Greystoke is taken by the female ape Kala, who's baby has recently died. Kala adopts the baby as her own and names him Tarzan (White-skin).
